LINGUISTICS: CONNECTING WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

LINGUISTICS: CONNECTING WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

PREFACE

It is important to note that people have different modalities and differing modalities.  We have sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and so forth.  But each of us has strengths and weaknesses in our modalities. And also very important is to note that our brains are wiring differently.  Some people are visual and have see the information.  Others are more audible and must hear the information for it to register.  And some people are tactile and must write the information.  There is no right and wrong here. What is really important is to understand for each person works and make sure to help people in the way that best suits them.

COMMUNICATIONS BARRIERS

Sometimes there are obvious disabilities that must be overcome to achieve effective communications such as sightlessness, hearing impairments, developmental and other disabilities, educational and linguistic barriers dividing the speaker and audience.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE HEAD ON

As a linguist, educator, and scientifically focused engineer I developed awareness and strategies to address this.  At the beginning of any new interaction with someone else I try to understand if the person is proficient in English, the educational speech level  they comprehend, whether there are noise level distractions and obstacles, and so forth.  In general I try to speak slowly and very precisely.  In a work context I would always have the official phonetic alphabet taped to the side of my monitor and when appropriate I would spell out key words in the official phonetic alphabet (A for Alpha, B for Bravo, etc.)  If everyone makes their best effort to helped others with challenges navigate through all of the difficult interactions, we could all make this world a better place for those who are already challenged and disadvantaged.
